Historical Overview

ESP was  founded in 1953 by the late Alexander L. Alves, beginning operations in a 6,000 square foot facility with eight employees and eight accounts.

From it's first day of operations, the company had a distinct advantage in Alves' commitment to innovation; he is today remembered as one of the founding fathers of the powdered-metal industry.  In the early years, Alves assembled a strong technical team that soon set the industry standards for quality and precision in shapes ranging from the simple to the complex.

This team was most evident as ESP went on to become the source for some of the most revolutionary developments in working with powdered metals, including pioneering the development of high-density, sintered and hot forged powdered metal components (having devoted extensive research to hot-forged powder metal, the company is capable of manufacturing the strongest and most durable powder metal parts) as well as early development work in the still-young metal injection molding industry.  ESP has also been a leader in the production of soft-iron magnetic, aluminum, and stainless steel components and in the use of pre-alloyed powders for improved metallurgical properties.

ESP's first major expansion came in 1960 with the opening of a new 50,000 square foot facility located on 13 acres in Watertown.

Mr. Alves retired from the daily grind in 1975, when his son, Alexander R. Alves was appointed President and CEO while the elder Alves continued on as chairman of the board of directors until his passing in 1993.

Growth continued in 1986 with the acquisition of Dixon Sintaloy of nearby Stamford, Connecticut.  Later, in 1993, the acquisition of New Industrial Techniques, Inc. of Coral Springs, Florida (a division of Handy & Harman), necessitated a 50,000 square foot building expansion followed by an additional 6,000 square feet in 1996.  Most recently, in 1998, ESP acquired the Stamford, Connecticut-based powder metal operations of Pitney Bowes.

Now in its 50th year of operation, ESP has evolved into one of America's premier producers of precision powdered metal, thermoset, and thermoplastic component parts and assemblies.  From gears, pulleys, and sprockets to cams and levers, structural components to high flux density magnetic components, electrical contacts to special process parts such as hot forged and Injectomet® metal injection molded,  ESP is a full service custom parts manufacturer.
